Why it matters

Taking care of your shoes is part of taking care of your running.

Most runners remember mileage only when a pair already feels flat. A smart rotation helps you notice wear earlier, use each shoe for the job it was bought for, and replace pairs on purpose instead of in a hurry.

Research note

A prospective study of 264 recreational runners found that using multiple running shoes was associated with a lower injury hazard (HR 0.614), roughly a 39% reduction.

A good rotation helps you

  • Spot overused pairs before they become uncomfortable.
  • Avoid burning through your favorite shoes too early.
  • Keep fresher options ready for harder sessions and race day.

Shoes wear before they look done

Foam, outsole grip, and stability can fade gradually over hundreds of kilometers. Tracking usage makes that wear visible before a pair becomes a guess.

Rotation spreads the load

Using the same pair every day concentrates impact on one shoe and one ride feel. In a 22-week study, runners who used more than one pair had about 39% lower running-related injury risk.

Different runs ask for different shoes

A long run, recovery jog, tempo session, and race do not feel the same. Matching the right pair to the right workout keeps training more intentional.

Features

Everything a runner needs to make their shoes last.

Built around the way you actually train — not a generic activity log.

  • Custom Shoe Profiles

Brand, model, nickname, purchase date, photo. Track every pair separately and see exactly where each one stands in its life.

  • Apple Health Sync

Automatically import recorded running workouts from Apple Health. Distance, pace, duration, and heart rate flow in without lifting a finger.

  • Wear Tracking & Statistics

Watch each shoe’s wear ring fill in real time, with per-shoe stats: total and average distance, pace, duration, and run count — all in one view.

  • Estimated Retirement Date

Get a predicted retirement date for each shoe based on your training pace and wear curve — so you can plan replacements before they’re forced on you.

  • Smart Notifications

Four perfectly-timed nudges: overuse alerts when a pair runs too often without rest, wear-threshold pings as each shoe crosses key milestones, recovery reminders after hard sessions, and ready-to-go signals when a pair is back in rotation.

  • Smart Rotation Suggestions

Get recommendations on which pair to lace up next, based on each shoe’s wear and recovery — across daily, long, tempo, race, and trail runs.

  • Multiple Run Types

Assign Daily, Long, Tempo, Race, and Trail shoes — and let Shoe Health match each workout to the right pair automatically.

  • Home Screen Widgets

Glance at remaining mileage, next rotation, and shoe health right from your Home Screen and Lock Screen.

How it works

From first setup to a smarter shoe rotation.

Shoe Health fits into the routine you already have: add your pairs once, let workouts sync, and check in when you need a better next-shoe decision.

  1. 01

    Connect Apple Health

Give Shoe Health access to your workouts and running distance so completed runs start flowing in automatically instead of being logged by hand.

  2. 02

    Add your shoes

Create a profile for each pair with brand, model, nickname, purchase date, photo, and run type so every shoe starts with its own history.

  3. 03

Set the right shoes for each run type

Assign default and suitable pairs for daily, long, tempo, race, and trail runs so the app can guide you toward the best option for each workout.

  4. 04

    Track wear over time

As workouts import, each shoe builds its own mileage, pace, duration, wear level, and retirement estimate based on how you actually train.

  5. 05

    Rotate smarter every week

Open the app or widget to see which pair is freshest, which one needs rest, and which shoes are getting close to retirement before they become a problem.

  6. 06

    Stay ahead with notifications

Get timely nudges when a pair is overused, crosses a wear threshold, needs recovery time, or is ready to go back into rotation.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. Shoe Health works with any running workout that ends up in Apple Health — whether recorded on iPhone, Apple Watch, or imported from a third-party app.

What data does Shoe Health read?

Only what it needs: running workouts, walking + running distance, step count, heart rate (display only), and running power (optional). You grant or revoke each permission anytime in iPhone Settings → Health → Shoe Health.

Where is my data stored?

Your shoe profiles live on your device and in your private iCloud container. Apple Health data is processed in-memory only — never written to a database, never sent to any third-party server.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Everything runs locally on your device. iCloud sync happens in the background when a connection is available.

Can I retire and archive shoes?

Yes. Mark any pair as retired and Shoe Health keeps its full history visible under the Retired filter, separate from your active rotation.

How is Premium different from Free?

Free covers up to 3 shoes with all core tracking. Premium unlocks unlimited shoes, multiple run types (Daily / Long / Tempo / Race / Trail), and smart rotation suggestions.
