Running shoes are commonly said to last about 480–800 km (300–500 miles). That range is a useful starting point, but it’s not a hard deadline — and replacing a pair the moment it ticks over an odometer number can mean binning a good shoe early or, worse, running on a dead one that happens to be under the limit.

The more reliable approach is to treat mileage as one signal among several and pay closest attention to how the shoe looks, feels, and affects your body.

The mileage guideline — and its limits

The 480–800 km (300–500 mile) figure exists because midsole foam gradually loses its ability to absorb and return impact over hundreds of kilometres. It’s a reasonable ballpark for a typical cushioned trainer.

But that range is wide for a reason, and even it doesn’t fit every shoe:

  • Lightweight and racing shoes wear faster. Thin, minimal midsoles and soft racing foams often reach the end of their useful life well before 480 km.

Why mileage alone can mislead

Two pairs with identical mileage can be in very different condition, because wear depends on far more than distance:

  • Your body weight and running style change how much load each stride puts through the foam.

Uneven or lopsided wear

If the sole is worn much more on one side, or the shoe no longer sits flat on a table, its support has changed shape — which can subtly alter how you land.

New aches after runs

Unexplained soreness in your feet, shins, knees, hips, or lower back that appears or worsens around a shoe’s late life can be a sign the cushioning is no longer doing its job. It’s not proof on its own, but combined with mileage and visible wear it’s a strong hint.

Upper breakdown

Holes, a stretched-out fit, a heel counter that no longer holds, or a sole starting to separate all mean the shoe can’t support your foot the way it should.
